Bagnoli Project

Bagnoli Project
LAND RECLAMATION
With an area of about 172 hectares of land, the Bagnoli area is one of the most important reclamation interventions conducted at the national level.
The Integrative Characterisation Plan, the subsequent health-environmental risk analysis and the in situ and ex situ-off site tests made it possible to assess the level of risk of contamination existing on the site, to determine the objectives of the remediation and the related application technologies, to be applied also in an integrated way, which are:
- thermal desorption and soil washing, of a chemical nature
- phytoremediation, of a biological nature
In January 2023, the reclamation site of the former Eternit area, an asbestos factory once connected to the activities of the steel mill, was completed. The intervention is one of the most important complete asbestos remediation interventions carried out in Italy, with the disposal of about 70,000 tonnes of material containing asbestos, for a total value of about € 23.8 million.
Currently, all areas of the site are handed over to the companies in charge of the remediation interventions.
MARINE AREA REMEDIATION
The sea area of Bagnoli extends from the port of Pozzuoli to the island of Gaiola, for about 14.75 square kilometres. In 2006, the Municipality of Naples issued an ordinance that provides that the marine-coastal area can be deemed safe for swimming only after the completion of the remediation of the marine sediments.
Thanks to the ABBACO research project, contaminated sediments have been estimated by detecting generalised pollution of the seabed. The remediation project therefore includes interventions for the removal of these sediments, capping and confinement to prevent the re-contamination of the seabed.
